[050-WIP8] YACD (HE Mage)

This is the first time I've ever had a character reach Level 50 in any *band. Also the first character to survive past lvl 45 or 3000', yet here I am knock, knock, knocking on Sauron's door. The strangest thing is that I haven't found Kelek's. I've checked the BM (and the new bookstore) every time, and believe me my eyes have been peeled in the dungeon. Was Kelek's removed in this version? Is this some sort of bug? (Both this much bad luck and the likelihood of a bug seem like long shots... but who knows?)

Anyway, it's been a fun adventure getting a lot of new equipment and stuff that I'd only heard or read about before, but now that I'm decently kitted out I need to ask: Do I have what it takes to beat Sauron? Morgoth? If I'm missing anything, please let me know. Can I kill them without Kelek's (even if my name isn't Timo)?

I've killed 66 of the 96 uniques I've seen, the highest being Ancalagon, Khamul, Glaurung and Hoarmurth of Dir, but I haven't killed Saruman or anyone listed after him outside of those four. Is this a problem? Should I hunt down more uniques before taking on Sauron/Morgoth?

I'd also appreciate any tips for what to expect from both Sauron and Morgoth. I've never faced them before. Thanks guys!


Quick summary on the dump, Lvl 50 High-Elf Mage, +34 speed unhasted, Max CON & INT, all resistances covered, Acid and Fire Immunity. Current weapon (Calris) aggravates, but gets the job done, especially when hunting Bile and Hell Wyrms (and was perfect for the Chromatic Dragon stronghold I just cleared out at 4800').

Kelek's is still around, it's just that it seems to be much rarer than in previous versions. Did you complete every possible quest? It'll sometimes be given as a reward for higher-level quests if you haven't already found it.

You'll miss Mass Banishment and Mana Storm, but Sauron and Morgoth can be killed without Kelek's. You might try hitting them repeatedly with Rift and healing between spells as necessary - take a couple of Staves of the Magi or even better a handful of Restore Mana potions if you've been stockpiling them.

I'd definitely kill more uniques. Sauron and Morgoth can summon the remaining uniques, and you don't want some of them turning up to complicate matters in the middle of a tight battle. I generally kill all uniques before tackling Sauron.

Thanks Cameron. I should have mentioned that about the quests. It was quests that initially drew me to NPP, and shortly after I started this character, I decided to try playing without taking any quests to see if I still got decent artifacts and could complete the game. Before I had this feeling that the only way to get artifacts was to take a lot of quests. As it turns out, you just get artifacts sooner without having to dive as deep if you take quests. Without taking quests, the best solution seems to be just to keep diving and they'll come eventually.

The Phial didn't drop until I was cLvl29 (1700'), then I found a couple good ones at cLvl 30 (1900'). The real watershed didn't come until I entered a Greater Vault at cLvl 33 (2050') and found about 19 artifacts. So it works, but it's just a different experience than I've had before. I wish I knew if the reason I've lived this long was because if more skillful playing, or not taking quests. Heh.

Here's my Mage tip:

Keep your distance, use Mana Storm or a Missile Launcher (Missile Launcher for Mage? Heresy, I say! smile ) and Door Creation. Door Creation allows you to hide beyond their line of fire and thus use Activations and Staves of Healing and Magi without fear of dying due to a failed activation.

Door Creation is the single most underrated spell in the game, use it.

Thanks Ramela. I was debating if I found a better weapon if I should just take the plunge and melee Sauron and Morgoth, but after that piece of advice I'll save that strategy for another time. So now I'm just waiting on Kelek's while I slowing kill off the uniques.

I'm having a hard time isolating the uniques from each other at 4900'. I can take just about anyone one-on-one, but I can't take multiples, especially not summoners, especially without Kelek's. Would it be better to just run away (or change level) until I find an isolated unique, or would it be better to go up 400' or so and try there?

The main reason I'm down at 4900' is to improve my drops. Either to get better equipment or in hopes that Kelek's will fall. My current favorite pastime at this depth is to hunt Red and Black D's (due to my immunities), since they tend to have the greatest risk/reward payoff.
