Brigand.

Got fed up with Paladins and wanted a little more "oomph" on the melee front than what you get from a Rogue. So I started up a Brigand, for the first time since winning with one of them.

This one has been very lucky too, this time I resolve to win, or at least die later.

Re: Brigand.

Edited dump.

This Char is coming along nicely, aside from some unlucky quest monster selections.

Was forced to abandon 3 quests in a row, now my fame is gone. I'm taking pit quests for now, since all the uniques around dlvl 65 are too fast for me, while pits tend to be more reasonable, when played with care.

That is really unlucky. I almost always play pit quests at that depth. Giant pits and small dragon pits should be a walkover for Zarath. Humanoid or animal ones are trickier (GMM's and 13, 14 Hydra's). I think I'd rather take on a humanoid pit with 4 GMM's than a level quest with 15 of them. Tele_self and tele_other are dangerous on GMM quests, but the drops can be really good from GMM. I might have risked it and bought up a load of healing potions and taken on:

At least you have res_sound covered.

Re: Brigand.

Yea, but I just lost a really lucky/good Paladin to a Master Mystic, who knocked me out with two rounds of melee from his double move.

So, if a Character that can fight most high element Wyrms can insta die to a Master Mystic double moving, I'll avoid the GMMs until I get my speed up. Currently on dlvl 62 with +3 speed. Scary times. Since I can soon lose the CON ring, I might ignore quests for a while, crash dive to dlvl 70-75 and scour the floor for a good Speed ring. +7 or better.

Then I can hunt some of the worthwile Uniques. Saruman and Glaurung are particlary juicy with proper preparation.

Sadly, I propably wont be able to play until monday. sad

Re: Brigand.

Propably not.

Unless I find an ego Scythe of Slicing/Chaos Blade/Mace of Disruption that does better damage to Morgoth than Glaive of Pain, I'll start using the Glaive again, after I've found and killed Ancalagon.

EDIT: Also, Gothmog and Pazuzu need to speak with that Scythe too.

The !! lets you know when any/all of the Rods are recharged.

Now, after a days time, I now feel really sick about losing this char. I should have changed character for a while to regain my motivation instead of taking unneccesary risks...

mmm how does it let you know? tongue

Guess I have to start a char and try it out tongue

I just started a brigand, first time for me. Whats special about those? They only get 3 blows a round, even with 18/40 STR/DEX
oooh I see I can steal from monsters! Is that useful? If so, from which monster should I attempt to steal? Can you get items that you wont get when you kill the monster?
And what about his trap ability? useful? if so how?

And as his first quest he got half orcs at lvl 4 ?
IS this a bug? I thought all first quests was at level 1?

Re: Brigand.

Stealing is not very useful. Try it out on a sleeping unthreatening monster (who isn't a thief himself) with a great drop. Wormtongue is hard to steal from since he is a thief himself, but Mim I might try if I found him sleeping.

Make note that the victim of your theft attempt get's aggravated and hasted. If you try it several times in a short time or get caught, the whole dungeon level gets aggravated and the town might close up all the stores. In general it is not worth it.

Like Rogues, Brigands do character level * 2 / 3 extra damage with a sling, have better Sneak attacks on sleeping monsters and can lay traps, which are the reasons I sometimes play a Brigand over a Warrior.

'O' is the command for laying traps and 'O'ing a trap you made allows you to modify it in 1+(level/6) ways. The modified traps can be quite usefull.

Not the whole dungeon level it seems, every friggin level! I got some message saying that everyone was looking out for me.

Not that I ever stole anyting useful.

However I can see that its a little useful on the early levels when you want to discover a lot of items quickly to feed that unIDd pile.

I have to try that on my second try, first try died because I was bored.

Re: Brigand.

Traps are useful for early rogue and brigand characters. I use them to help rougues with early coin pit quests. If I don't have enough damage or HP (or poison resist), then luring them out a few at a time and letting them run into traps is an easy way to clear the pit.

Traps along with a good sling can make a weak low-CL rogue quite a powerful character.
