For anyone interested, the latest competition at oook.cz is a NPP 7.1.0 hobbit druid

Cool!  I'll give throwing another try.

Oh yeah maybe one other thing to think about would be mushrooms.  The risk/reward is too unfavorable to eat random ones.  And even the helpful ones arent worth using an inventory slot to carry them.  So as things are now i just completely ignore them.

#4 Re: General Discussion Taproom » What features of NPPAngband don't work well? » 2015-05-08 09:33:41

I cant think of anything specific to NPP, but a few general *band features i wouldn't miss:

- thrown weapons, i've only ever thrown a weapon out of pure desperation, seems like this is of no practical use

- stuck doors, always bothered me, just purely a time waster

Hey also its great to see all the development and hope the testing is going well!  I'm stuck in the real world for a few months, hope to rejoin the game one of these days!

#6 Re: Fixed Bugs » npp moria ranger » 2013-09-17 00:23:40

one other thing, from playing years ago its my hazy (possibly mistaken) recollection that death quasits used to be able to teleport the player around.  could that be true?  i dont think thats ever happened to me in nppmoria.

edit -- thinking about this some more, I guess moria went through revisions, just like other *bands, where features change over time.  Because I dont remember the balrog passing through walls either!

#7 Re: Fixed Bugs » npp moria ranger » 2013-09-11 17:34:50

ok but there's no monster with a shards attack in nppmoria :-)

#8 Re: Fixed Bugs » npp moria ranger » 2013-09-10 20:00:22

very minor but in this dump I noticed the cloak description says it confers shard resistance!

Thanks!  Two more to report:

I found this item

p) a Composite Bow (x4) (+4,+4)

but when I inspect it, I see

No object (0,1) (x4) (+4,+4)
Firing (nothing) from this bow does 0d0+0 damage (0 avg), with a critical
hit chance of 10 percent.

It was lying on the floor at a depth of 2400 ft.

   It weighs 4.0 lb.

It would fetch 1040 gold in an average shop.

Also I found the Phial of Galadriel.  Its description says it can be activated for illumation.  But if I push the 'A' key it says
You have nothing to activate.

couple of other minor stuff:

1. for moria with roguelike keys option selected, the weapon swap key should be 'X' (capital X).

It should be.  Where is it wrong?

X isnt working, I'm only able to swap by temporarily turning off roguelike keys

Yes, I double checked it.  THeir first attack is 0d0.  Thier second attack has damage 14d8.

And ghosts are correct as well: Thier attack damages are: 0d0, 22d8, and 1d10.

Both move at +1 speed.  I suspect they are intended to be the "enforcers" in the dungeon to punish those who dive too boldly (by Moria standards).

Thanks for checking.  I will be treating these monsters with a newfound respect :-)

couple of other minor stuff:

1. for moria with roguelike keys option selected, the weapon swap key should be 'X' (capital X).
2. for the 'orc warrior' monster, in the health status bar its name is printed as 'orc captain'
3. banshee seems to do an enormous amount of melee damage, like 100hp in one round, is there possibly something miscoded?

#12 Re: YACDs/YAWPs/etc » [7.0.0] Nice reward » 2013-08-30 07:59:23

nice progress though, sure got from 450' to 1900' pretty fast

trying out the competition.  The ranger starts with "beginner-magick" book in inventory, but can't read it or study it.

Maybe in the code somewhere, is the ranger still tied to druid magic realm?

#15 Re: Fixed Bugs » 6.1.2 final - bad launcher inscription in ammo description » 2013-06-09 00:23:42

I remember something similar from a long time ago, its issue #8 here
http://forum.nppangband.org/viewtopic.php?id=944

it has to do with the string "% o" in "10% off"
some compilers interpret it as a format specifier for sprintf, some dont

the fix, if I remember, was replacing a call to msg_format() with a call to msg_print() for wherever in the source is printing this line

Moria revival, all right!  I played pretty far and didnt see any issues.  But saw two things when I posted the dump on oook:

http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=14319

The versions is wrong (6.1.2) and maybe also there should be something to differentiate a Moria dumpfile from a NPP dumpfile so it will show up differently in the ladder?

#17 Re: Fixed Bugs » 6.1.2 wand of slow monster » 2013-05-05 12:36:46

Update!  Based on your comment and after some more experiments, I think I was probably wrong to diagnose the cause as wand vs rod.  If the monster you aim it at is asleep, thats when it has no effect.  If you aim it at a monster that is awake, it works.  I am sending a savefile.

Using a wand of slow monster prints a message that the target monster is slowed, but in fact it has no slowing effect on the monster.  The issue is only with the wand, a rod of slow monster seems to work ok.

#19 Re: Suggestions / Feature Requests » 6.1.2 fame? » 2013-04-21 08:05:28

i like the descriptions, they add some character to the game.  maybe adding a few more levels would help, or skewing them so that you see some progress at the lower fame levels, especially since newer players will probably be in this range most of the time.  like "anonymous" could be lower than "insignificant", or something like "notable", "esteemed", "renowned" could be added at the high end

#20 Re: Suggestions / Feature Requests » 6.1.2 fame? » 2013-04-19 09:18:41

ahh thanks for the explanation!  indeed the very next quest it went up to fair.  just felt like it was stuck in the same place for a long time, kind of reassuring to see it going up :-)

seems like something is up with fame calculation.  Ive succeeded in 2 monster quests + 4 guardian quests + 1 pit quest + 1 arena quest + 2 vault quests.  and still have "poor" reputation in the guild.

#22 Fixed Bugs » 6.1.2 description of sling damage » 2013-04-19 00:18:32

level 6 elf brigand found a nice sling.  the curious thing is that when I examine the sling description it gives a different damage estimate than when I examine the ammo.  one of them must be wrong, but I'm not sure which.

A Sling of Power (x2) (+9,+20)

It has no special abilities, but its to-dam value may be unusually high.

Firing Iron Shots (1d4) (+0,+0) from this sling does 3d4+66 damage (72 avg),
with a critical hit chance of 4 percent.

It was lying on the floor at a depth of 50 ft.

   It weighs 0.5 lb.

It would fetch 3905 gold in an average shop.

71 Iron Shot (1d4) (+0,+0)

It can be shot with a sling.

Firing this ammunition from a Sling of Power (x2) (+9,+20) does 2d4+40
damage (44 avg), with a critical hit chance of 4 percent.

They were bought in a store.

   They weigh 35.5 lb.

They would fetch 2 gold apiece in an average shop.

#23 Re: General Discussion Taproom » NPPMoria » 2013-04-17 10:18:04

3 minimum also comes from D&D days!  You threw three 6-sided dice and got a number between 3 and 18.  Then later came increases to 18/01 etc

#24 Re: Compiling / Installation Help » Compiling NPP for Linux? » 2013-03-26 01:33:22

After compiling nppangband you can run

ldd nppangband

to see the shared libraries required to run the binary.  If you compile nppangband on ubuntu 12.10, then try to run that executable on a ubuntu 11.10 system, it won't work because it has different versions of these shared libraries.

However if you run ldd on your printer driver I'm guessing you will see that it does not have any shared library dependencies, thats why its distro agnostic :-)

#25 Re: Compiling / Installation Help » Compiling NPP for Linux? » 2013-03-24 23:24:52

Distributing a linux binary via .deb or .rpm would mean dependencies on specific versions of libc, libncurses, etc; in other words, you would need a separate .deb for each version of each distro.  It's not really feasible :-( especially for something that's still under development
