yasd hobbit brigand

Check out that cool randart weapon, no slays or brands, just big dice!

Happened upon a demon quest level and got knocked out fighting a lesser balrog hand-to-hand.  Similar to how Gorost the arsonist died, one of my older yasd posts.

From my trials with fighter type characters, the two biggest dangers are:
1. getting knocked out in melee, can happen with little warning and its an instadeath when it does
2. the "cause mortal wounds" spell.  Especially for races that get a poor saving throw, there doesn't seem to be any defense to this damaging spell

I am going to add more warnings before you get knocked out. 

In order to counter the weaknesses of this class, I think maxing out the character's constitution is probably a higher priority than the ring of resist nether, or possibly also using that sling that adds a constitution bonus.  I am wondering...were you hasted when this battle happened?  Those gauntlets of speed (+8) also probably could have greatly strengthened this character.

Beta-2 should be out in a day or two.  It has a couple game balance improvements that could help characters like this one.

How are you like the brigand class?  I only played it once or twice, but I found it more fun than a standard warrior.  Also, what did you think of the stronghold quests.  I am hoping the reward will be worth risk from now on out.  I added some extra item drops for 5 randomly choses creatures in the pits/nests quests as well.  Those are hopefully much more worthwhile as well.

More warnings would be great!  Although might not have helped Gorost the arsonist, if I recall he actually went from stunned (not heavily) all the way to knocked out in one turn.

Fighting the lesser balrog, I don't think i was hasted, seemed like there were ~30  lesser balrogs on the level so I figured I couldnt afford to haste for all of them.  I had already beaten a couple hand to hand.

I'm a big fan of brigands,  traps help a lot with the mobs of weaker monsters that can overcome a warrior by pure numbers. Its fun strategy to figure out where to set traps and which type.  The traps are great for creeping coins early; hounds & young dragons midgame; and late in the game the dispel monster trap can wipe out a whole dragon pit if you get it set just right.

I used to play kobold brigand a lot because the poison resist makes it safer to set poison gas trap.  But I think the poor saving throw was causing problems late in the game, so I am just now trying out hobbit (the low hp is the tradeoff, but I was hoping vitality boosts from quest would help with that).  I already got another hobbit brigand going who is now farther than this one!

Stronghold quests seem like the best strategy now, I take a half empty pack down each time so I can fill it with goodies.  its to the extreme that I notice I'm not fighting any uniques, just going from one stronghold to the next.  Latest  hobbit brigand breezed through them 750'-1850', but had to flee the one at 1950' (humanoid)

Also, a question came up a week or two ago about the utility of thrown weapons, I just found a great one
The Well-balanced Spear 'Rhuil' (5d6) (+5,+8)
it has acid brand.  I threw it at a mumak and measured damage with rod of probing, 300 points damage!
